Zenith Insurance Company, the League’s endorsed carrier of workers’ compensation insurance, offers resources on strengthening your Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP).
The resources allow one to examine the core elements of an IIPP, which include, but are not limited to hazard identification, prevention, control, accident investigation and effective training.
This past week, the League’s Environmental & Regulatory Affairs Director, Christopher Valadez, attended a workshop emphasizing tailoring IIPP to suit an individual operation. Insight was provided focusing on the significance of elevating the role of safety within an operation through the communication of expectation and responsibilities, dissecting the shared responsibility at all levels within an operation. Of note, various tips were provided on increasing the effectiveness of communication, which included encouraging all employees to share suggestions for improving safety practices and to identify problem areas. Instances highlighted were communication barriers that exist due to language and literacy challenges. The workshop also covered examples of a “working” system of recordkeeping for safety training and feedback, which can include incentivizing workplace behaviors as well as, step-by-step actions necessary to correct hazards and tips for performing thorough accident investigations and recordkeeping for work-related injuries and illnesses.
